Some days on the farm don’t go as planned… and sometimes, those are the best days of all. What started as a normal evening routine—feeding animals, checking on the barn, and getting ready for a cold night—quickly turned into something unexpected. After finding something I just couldn’t ignore, I decided to take a chance and try something we haven’t done in a long time here at Cog Hill Farm. With a little help from a borrowed incubator, we’re setting things in motion and hoping for the best. From dealing with a broody Silkie, to Loretta causing her usual mischief, to the peaceful rhythm of feeding the farm… this is just another real, unscripted day in our life. Now, the waiting begins. After looking at the drainage and talking with Mr. Greg about the best way to handle it, Brooke decided to take matters into her own hands and start reshaping the area with the skid steer. Over the course of several days, she worked to slope the bank, create water turnouts, and redirect the runoff so the road won’t continue eroding every time it storms. The goal is simple: give the water somewhere else to go instead of letting it destroy the road. This road may not get daily traffic, but it’s important for getting to the old barn, equipment, bees, and other parts of the farm. With more rain in the forecast, it was time to stop putting it off and finally tackle the problem. We’ll also collect eggs, check on the animals, and share a little of the everyday life here on the farm. Today might have been one of the sweetest days on the farm. I went to visit two brand new baby emus, and I have to tell you… they completely stole my heart. These little ones are only a few days old and already full of curiosity and personality. While visiting our friends at G&G Farm, I got to spend a little time with these adorable emu chicks and bring them a treat from the garden. Watching them explore, peck around, and figure out this big world was absolutely precious. If you've never seen baby emus up close, you're in for a treat! Back at Cog Hill Farm, the day continues with gathering eggs from the chickens, checking on the animals, and enjoying another warm spring day here in Alabama. Spring is arriving on the farm and everything feels alive again.
